Mustang Marathoners off to a running start

They’re off and running.

About 175 Woodward School students, staff and family members turned out Monday for the first day of the Mustang Marathoners Running Club.
“They’ve taken on the challenge to walk or run a progressive Marathon – one mile at a time,” said Michelle Crippen, who is the school’s program coordinator.

The Mustang Marathoners completed their first mile – a one-mile course was set up around the campus – with their collective goal of completing the final leg at the Second Harvest Food Bank’s ‘Hit the Streets for Hunger’ running event scheduled for April 6.

Each club member received a Running Club t-shirt and a toe token for each mile completed.

Practice sessions are scheduled every Monday and Thursday from now until the spring. Members will have sheet to log in their miles.

Crippen was urged to put together the Mustang Marathoner by her fellow teachers. About three years ago, she ran 13-plus miles, training one mile at a time at nearby Woodward Park. Crippen indicated that she really wasn’t a runner, initially.

She became just that, achieving her goal of doing half-marathons.

As for the running club, Crippen said it’s OK to walk. “The purpose is to be participating and moving,” she said.

The Mustang Marathoners will meet each Monday and Thursday after school from now until the spring. Members can make up their miles off-campus but a signature by a parent or coordinator for verification would be required.

Crippen was pleased with the strong turnout. “We’re 175 and still growing,” she said.

Members will have until that first week of April to complete 25.2 miles.

Those tallying up 26.2 miles by April 8 will earn their marathon medal.

Members will be responsible for keeping track of the number of miles they complete. Club members will be given a toe token for each mile completed. Toe tokens may be worn as a bracelet or hung on a backpack.  The last miles of the Progressive Marathon may be run at a local running event (more info to come) where students will be awarded a Finisher’s Medal.
